Why the Metal in Your Bracelet Matters

Bracelets sit on one of the most exposed parts of your body. Your wrists are washed constantly, coated in hand sanitiser, splashed during cooking and cleaning, and sweating throughout the day — especially under a bracelet where the metal traps moisture against your skin with no airflow. If the base metal contains nickel or the plating wears through to expose copper or brass, bracelets are where you'll see the damage fastest: green marks circling your wrist, itching under the chain, and a finish that looks dull and patchy within weeks.

Every bracelet in our collection uses one of two materials, both chosen for the constant moisture and friction that wrists experience:

316L Stainless Steel with PVD

Surgical-grade, nickel-free steel in warm 18k gold or polished silver tones. The PVD finish on gold pieces is bonded through vacuum deposition — waterproof, tarnish-proof, and resistant to soap, sanitiser, and the constant wet-dry cycle your wrists go through daily. Polished steel pieces offer the same durability in a bright silver tone with no coating to maintain. Every PVD piece is backed by a two-year colour guarantee.

925 Sterling Silver

A precious metal alloy that's naturally hypoallergenic and nickel-free. Sterling silver has a warm, luminous brightness with a depth that polished steel doesn't quite match. It can develop a natural patina over time — especially on bracelets, which are exposed to more water and chemicals than earrings or necklaces — but a quick polish restores the shine in seconds.

Both materials are safe for sensitive skin and metal allergies. Clasps and closures use the same material as the bracelet chain — no cheaper components hidden where the bracelet fastens against your skin.

Shop Bracelets by Style

Chain Bracelets

Fine cable chains, rope chains, and link chains that drape around the wrist. The most versatile bracelet style — lightweight, easy to stack, and comfortable enough for permanent wear. Works equally well solo or layered with other styles. Our most popular starting piece for anyone building a bracelet collection.

Bangles

Solid bands that slide over the hand onto the wrist. No clasp to fiddle with — just push on and go. The simplest bracelet to wear and the easiest to stack (they don't tangle like chains can). Slim bangles layer beautifully; wider bangles make a statement on their own.

Cuff Bracelets

Open-ended bands that fit through the gap rather than over the hand. Cuffs offer a bolder look than chain bracelets with the adjustability that bangles lack — tighten or loosen the fit by gently bending the opening. The most comfortable option for people who find clasps annoying or bangles too rigid.

Finding Your Bracelet Size

Bracelet sizing is less standardised than ring sizing, which means more people get it wrong. Wrap a flexible tape measure around your wrist just above the wrist bone — where a bracelet naturally sits. Your bracelet size is your wrist measurement plus the ease below:

Snug fit — wrist + 1.5cm.

The bracelet sits close against your skin with minimal movement. Best for active wear, gym use, and bracelets you want to stay in one position. Fitted chain bracelets and slim bangles work best at this fit.

Comfortable fit — wrist + 2cm.

A little movement but the bracelet stays on the lower wrist. The most popular fit for everyday wear — not too tight, not sliding around. Works for all bracelet styles.

Relaxed fit — wrist + 2.5cm. For bangles, measure differently.

A relaxed fit creates a more casual, draped look — works for chains and bangles but not ideal for gym wear. For bangles specifically, measure around the widest part of your hand (knuckles together, thumb tucked in) rather than your wrist, since the bangle needs to slide over your hand to get on.

Wearing Bracelets with Watches

Most people wear a watch or fitness tracker daily, which means your bracelet needs to coexist with it. A few approaches that work:

Same wrist, different positions

Wear the bracelet slightly above or below your watch. Slim chain bracelets and thin bangles work best here. Snake chains are particularly good because they lie flat and don't overlap with the watch band.

Opposite wrist

The simplest approach — watch on one wrist, bracelet(s) on the other. Avoids any interference and gives each wrist its own focal point. Stack multiple bracelets on the non-watch wrist for a balanced look.

What to avoid

Wide cuffs on the same wrist as a chunky watch — the two compete for space and create uncomfortable bulk. Multiple chain bracelets directly under a watch band can also cause tangling. If stacking on the watch wrist, keep it to one slim piece.

Building a Bracelet Stack

Mix chain weights

A fine cable chain alongside a heavier link chain creates dimension. Identical chains at the same weight look like one wide bracelet from a distance.

Mix styles

A chain bracelet alongside a bangle is one of the most effective combinations — the rigid bangle contrasts with the flowing chain, and the two behave differently on the wrist, creating movement and interest.

Mix metals deliberately

Gold and silver bracelets on the same wrist works when it's intentional. Alternate metals, or anchor with one dominant tone and add one accent piece in the other. Our gold PVD and sterling silver pieces are designed with matching proportions for clean mixed-metal stacking.

Leave room

2–3 bracelets on one wrist is the sweet spot. More than that starts to feel heavy and creates noise. If you're wearing a watch on the same wrist, one bracelet is usually the maximum before it feels crowded.

Complete Your Look

Match bracelet metals with pieces from our necklace collection, earrings collection, and rings collection — all use the same materials, so tones match precisely across your jewellery. For bracelets built for active lifestyles and gym wear, explore our gym jewellery collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What bracelets are best for sensitive skin?

Look for bracelets where the entire chain and clasp are made from hypoallergenic materials — not just the visible links. The safest metals are 316L surgical-grade stainless steel, 925 sterling silver, titanium, and solid gold (14k+). Our bracelets use either 316L stainless steel or 925 sterling silver throughout every component, including the clasp, which sits against the inner wrist where skin is particularly sensitive.

Why does my bracelet turn my wrist green?

Green marks are caused by copper oxidation. Most fashion bracelets use brass or copper-alloy chains with thin gold plating. When the plating wears through — and bracelets wear fast because wrists are washed constantly — the copper reacts with trapped moisture and skin acidity. Bracelets are worse for this than necklaces or earrings because the band traps sweat against your wrist with no airflow. Our bracelets use 316L stainless steel (no copper) or 925 sterling silver, neither of which causes green discolouration. Read more in our guide on why jewellery turns skin green.

Can I shower in my bracelet?

Stainless steel bracelets (both gold PVD and polished silver) are fully waterproof — shower, swim, and wash your hands without removing them. Sterling silver bracelets handle water but develop patina faster with daily washing, since wrists are exposed to soap and water far more frequently than neck or ears. For bracelets you never remove, stainless steel is the more practical material.

How do I measure my wrist for a bracelet?

Wrap a flexible tape measure around your wrist just above the wrist bone. Add 1.5cm for a snug fit, 2cm for a comfortable everyday fit, or 2.5cm for a relaxed, moveable fit. For bangles, measure around the widest part of your hand (knuckles together, thumb tucked) since the bangle needs to slide over your hand to get on.

Can I wear a bracelet with a smartwatch?

Yes. Slim chain bracelets and thin bangles sit comfortably alongside a watch on the same wrist. Wear the bracelet slightly above or below the watch so they don't stack directly on top of each other. Snake chains work particularly well because they lie flat and don't interfere with the watch band or sensors. Alternatively, wear the bracelet on your non-watch wrist.

How many bracelets can I stack?

2–3 is the sweet spot for one wrist. Mix chain weights, styles, and metals for visual variety. More than three starts to feel heavy and creates noticeable clinking. If you're wearing a watch on the same wrist, one bracelet alongside it is usually the comfortable maximum. On a watch-free wrist, 2–3 bracelets in a deliberate combination creates a strong look.
