Sterling Silver or Stainless Steel: Which Silver Necklace Suits You?

We offer silver necklaces in two distinct materials because no single metal does everything perfectly. Understanding the difference means choosing a necklace that matches your lifestyle rather than discovering the wrong choice the hard way.

925 Sterling Silver

Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver — a precious metal with a luminous, warm-toned brightness valued in jewellery for centuries. Naturally hypoallergenic and nickel-free. The trade-off is that real silver reacts with air and moisture over time, developing a natural patina. This isn't damage — a quick polish brings the bright finish back in seconds. Best for: People who appreciate the look and feel of a genuine precious metal and are happy with light occasional care.

316L Stainless Steel

Polished to a bright silver tone that closely resembles sterling silver in everyday wear. Doesn't tarnish, doesn't require polishing, is harder and more scratch-resistant than silver, and is fully waterproof — shower, swim, and sweat in it without any effect on the finish. The same alloy used in surgical implants. Best for: People who want a silver look with zero upkeep — wear it permanently, never remove it, never polish it.

Why Chain Material Matters

Necklaces are exposed to more wear than almost any other jewellery type. The chain links rub against each other constantly, the clasp bears mechanical stress every time you put it on and take it off, and the entire piece sits against skin exposed to sweat, perfume, moisturiser, and sunscreen throughout the day.

This is why cheap necklace chains fail first at the clasp and along the links closest to it — the highest-friction points. Both our materials are chosen to handle this: sterling silver's copper-alloy composition gives it good tensile strength for a precious metal, while 316L stainless steel is significantly harder and more resistant to mechanical wear. Neither will leave green marks on your neck the way brass or copper-based chains do when their plating wears through.

Pendant Necklaces

Delicate charms, crystal settings, and textured pendants on fine silver-toned chains. The focal-point necklace that adds detail to simple outfits — works beautifully alone or as the centrepiece of a layered stack. Browse pendant necklaces →

Choker Necklaces

Close-fitting chains in polished silver tones. Chokers frame the neck and collarbones — and because they have more skin contact than longer necklaces, the hypoallergenic materials matter even more here. Browse choker necklaces →

Layering Necklaces

Chains at varied lengths designed to stack without tangling. Mix chain weights and pendant styles for dimension — the cool tones of silver give layered necklaces a clean, cohesive look even with multiple pieces. Browse layering necklaces →

Pearl Necklaces

Freshwater pearls on silver-toned chains — the natural warmth of pearls against cool silver creates a soft, elegant contrast. All pearl settings use the same hypoallergenic materials as the chain. Browse pearl necklaces →

Styling Silver Necklaces

Silver necklaces naturally complement cool skin undertones, but mixed-metal styling has made the warm-vs-cool rule largely optional. A silver chain layered with a piece from our gold necklaces collection creates a deliberate contrast that reads as curated rather than mismatched — especially when the two necklaces sit at different lengths.

For a fully coordinated look, pair silver necklaces with our silver earrings and silver rings — all made from the same materials, so the tones match precisely. See every necklace style and metal finish in our main necklaces collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do silver necklaces tarnish?

It depends on the material. Our 925 sterling silver necklaces can develop a natural patina over time — a gradual darkening caused by silver reacting with air and moisture. This is normal for genuine silver and is easily removed with a soft polishing cloth. Our 316L stainless steel necklaces in silver finish don't tarnish at all — the material is completely resistant to oxidation, so they maintain their bright tone indefinitely without any care.

Can I shower in a silver necklace?

Our stainless steel silver necklaces are fully waterproof — shower, swim, and exercise without removing them. Sterling silver necklaces can handle water, but regular exposure to shower products (soap, shampoo, conditioner) will accelerate the patina. If you want a silver necklace you genuinely never take off, the stainless steel option is the practical choice. If you prefer sterling silver, simply polish it occasionally to maintain the brightness.

Will a silver necklace turn my neck green?

Not ours. Green discolouration is caused by copper or brass base metals reacting with your skin. Many "silver" fashion necklaces are actually plated brass that turns green once the plating wears through. Our necklaces use either solid 925 sterling silver (a precious metal with only trace copper that doesn't cause this reaction) or 316L stainless steel (which contains no copper at all). Neither will leave green marks on your skin.

What's the difference between sterling silver and silver-plated necklaces?

Sterling silver (925) is solid silver alloy throughout — there's no hidden base metal underneath. Silver-plated necklaces have a thin layer of silver over brass, copper, or other alloys. When that plating wears through (typically within months on chains, where link-to-link friction is constant), the exposed base metal tarnishes and can cause skin reactions. Sterling silver doesn't have this problem because the material is consistent all the way through. You can verify genuine sterling silver by the 925 hallmark.

Which material should I choose — sterling silver or stainless steel?

If you want the lustre and inherent value of a precious metal and are comfortable with occasional polishing, choose sterling silver. If you want zero maintenance — a necklace that never tarnishes, never needs polishing, handles water and sweat, and can be worn 24/7 without thought — choose stainless steel. Both are hypoallergenic and safe for sensitive skin. For layering, either material works, though stainless steel is slightly more practical since layered chains create more friction between links and a tarnish-proof material means less upkeep.

Is 316L stainless steel as nice as sterling silver?

They look very similar in everyday wear. Polished 316L steel has a bright, reflective silver tone that's difficult to distinguish from sterling silver at a glance. The main visual difference: sterling silver has a slightly warmer, softer lustre, while stainless steel is a touch cooler and more mirror-like. Where they differ most is in feel and weight — stainless steel is denser, so chains feel slightly more substantial, while sterling silver is lighter with a softer hand feel. Both look and feel like quality materials; it comes down to which characteristics matter more to you.
