For a closer fit where the pendant sits at the base of the throat, choose 16 inches. For a longer drop that works over high necklines or as a layering piece, 20–22 inches. Smaller, lighter pendants suit shorter chains; larger pendants generally look better on slightly longer chains where they have room to hang naturally.

The pendant setting, bail (the loop connecting pendant to chain), jump rings, and clasp all use the same 316L surgical-grade stainless steel or 925 sterling silver as the chain. This matters because many pendant necklaces use hypoallergenic chains but cheaper metal in the small connecting components, which then cause irritation where they rest against your skin.

Stainless steel PVD-coated pendant necklaces are fully waterproof — shower, swim, and wash your hands without removing them. The pendant, chain, and all connecting components handle water equally. Sterling silver pendant necklaces can handle occasional water but regular showering will accelerate patina on both the chain and the pendant setting. For pendant necklaces you never want to remove, PVD-coated stainless steel is the practical choice.

Standard pendant necklaces sometimes use a different (higher-quality) metal for the visible pendant and a cheaper alloy for the chain, which means the chain tarnishes while the pendant still looks fine — or vice versa. Our pendant necklaces use consistent materials throughout: if the chain is PVD-coated stainless steel, so is the pendant setting, bail, and clasp. Everything ages at the same rate.
