A Pearl Necklace Is Only as Good as Its Chain

Most affordable pearl necklaces get the pearl right and everything else wrong. The pearls themselves look beautiful, but they're strung on brass or copper-alloy chains with thin gold plating that tarnishes within months. The clasp starts to irritate your neck. The chain turns a dull greenish colour where it sits against your skin. Eventually you stop wearing the necklace — not because the pearls have lost their lustre, but because the metalwork around them has failed.

We build our pearl necklaces from the chain up. Every setting, link, and clasp uses 316L surgical-grade stainless steel (with 18k gold PVD coating for gold-tone pieces) or 925 sterling silver. The chains are tarnish-resistant, nickel-free, and hypoallergenic — so the metalwork matches the quality of the pearls it carries. The PVD-coated gold options are fully waterproof, meaning the chain and settings handle water, sweat, and humidity without degradation.

The pearls themselves are genuine freshwater pearls — naturally grown with the organic lustre and subtle surface variations that distinguish real pearls from imitation. Each pearl is individually selected for quality and paired with our durable, skin-safe metalwork to create pieces that last years, not months.

Pearl Necklace Styles

Single Pearl Pendants

One pearl, one chain — the most versatile pearl necklace and the easiest to style. A single freshwater pearl on a fine gold or silver chain works as an everyday piece that layers beautifully with other necklaces or makes a quiet statement on its own. This is the style that pairs with literally everything.

Pearl Accent Necklaces

Designs that incorporate pearls alongside metalwork — caged pearl settings, pearl-studded chains, and mixed-element pieces that blend the organic warmth of freshwater pearls with contemporary gold or silver structures. More visual presence than a single pendant while staying wearable for daily use.

Multi-Pearl Designs

Multiple pearls along a chain for a more traditional pearl aesthetic with a modern execution. The pearl strand reimagined on tarnish-free, hypoallergenic metalwork — giving you the classic pearl look without the fragile, high-maintenance construction of traditional pearl stringing.

How to Wear Pearl Necklaces Now

Pearls have moved on from their formal-only reputation. The way people wear them now is completely different from even five years ago:

With casual wear

A single pearl pendant over a plain t-shirt or sweatshirt is one of the strongest minimalist looks right now. The contrast between something precious and something everyday is the entire point — it reads as effortless and confident rather than overdressed.

Layered with chains

A pearl necklace at one length with a plain chain at another is one of the easiest layering combinations. Start with a pearl pendant at 16–18 inches and add a longer plain chain at 20–22 inches, or reverse the lengths depending on your neckline.

Mixed with other materials

Pearls alongside gold chains, stainless steel cuffs, and beaded bracelets — the rule of "only wear pearls with pearls" is long gone. The organic, irregular quality of freshwater pearls contrasts beautifully with the clean lines of metalwork.

Gender-neutral

Pearl necklaces are no longer gendered jewellery. Simple pearl pendants and understated pearl chains are worn across all genders, driven by the same shift toward self-expression that's reshaped the entire jewellery market.

Caring for Your Pearl Necklace

Freshwater pearls are organic gems — formed inside mussels, which means they're more delicate than metal or stone. Here's how to keep them looking their best:

Wipe after wearing.

A soft, damp cloth removes oils, sweat, and residue that can dull the pearl's surface over time. This takes five seconds and makes a real difference to long-term lustre.

Apply products first.

Put on perfume, hairspray, and moisturiser before your pearl necklace. The chemicals in these products can coat the pearl surface and gradually reduce its natural sheen.

Store separately.

Pearls are softer than metal and gemstones, so they can scratch if stored loose alongside other jewellery. A soft pouch or separate compartment protects them.

The chain handles more than the pearl.

Our stainless steel and sterling silver chains are built for constant wear, but freshwater pearls benefit from a little more care. The metal won't let you down — just be mindful of the pearls themselves.

Pearl necklaces layer beautifully with pieces from our other collections. Pair a pearl pendant with a plain chain from our gold necklaces or silver necklaces for an easy two-layer look. For more texture in your stack, add a piece from our beaded necklaces collection.

If you want the full waterproof experience for your entire necklace stack, browse our waterproof necklaces — though note that while our pearl necklace chains and settings are waterproof, freshwater pearls themselves benefit from less water exposure than pure metal pieces. Frequently Asked Questions

Are your pearl necklaces real pearls?

Yes. We use genuine freshwater pearls — naturally grown inside freshwater mussels, not manufactured or imitation. Freshwater pearls have a natural lustre and subtle surface characteristics (slight variations in shape and sheen) that distinguish them from synthetic alternatives. Each pearl is individually selected for quality before being set into our designs.

Can I wear a pearl necklace in the shower?

The chain and metalwork on our pearl necklaces are waterproof (stainless steel with PVD coating) or water-safe (sterling silver). The pearls themselves are fine with occasional water exposure, but regular showering isn't ideal for freshwater pearls — soap, shampoo, and hot water can gradually dull the pearl's natural lustre over time. For necklaces you want to wear in the shower daily without any consideration, our waterproof necklaces collection features all-metal designs built for exactly that.

What's the difference between freshwater pearls and other types?

Freshwater pearls are grown inside freshwater mussels (rather than saltwater oysters), which makes them more accessible in price while still being genuine, naturally formed pearls. They tend to have a softer, more organic lustre compared to the sharp mirror-like sheen of saltwater Akoya pearls. Freshwater pearls also come in a wider range of natural shapes — from near-round to slightly baroque — which gives each piece its own character. They're the most popular pearl type in contemporary jewellery because they offer real pearl quality at a price point that allows everyday wear.

Will the chain on a pearl necklace tarnish?

Not on ours. Standard pearl necklaces often use plated brass or copper chains that tarnish and discolour within months, which then transfers to the pearls and your skin. Our chains use 316L stainless steel with 18k gold PVD coating (fully tarnish-proof) or 925 sterling silver (naturally resistant to tarnish, though it can develop a gentle patina over time that a quick polish removes). The clasp, jump rings, and settings are all made from the same material — no cheaper components hidden in the construction.

Are pearl necklaces hypoallergenic?

Pearls themselves are organic and non-reactive — they don't cause skin allergies. The risk with pearl necklaces is always the metal in the chain, clasp, and settings. Our pearl necklaces use 316L surgical-grade stainless steel or 925 sterling silver — both nickel-free and hypoallergenic — throughout every metal component. If you've reacted to pearl necklaces before, the reaction was to the metalwork, not the pearls, and our materials eliminate that problem.

How do I clean freshwater pearls?

Gently. Wipe pearls with a soft, slightly damp cloth after wearing to remove oils and residue. Don't use chemical cleaners, ultrasonic cleaners, or abrasive materials — these can damage the pearl's delicate surface layer (called nacre). For the metal chain and settings, the same cloth works fine, or you can use a standard jewellery polishing cloth on the sterling silver components. Store pearl necklaces in a soft pouch or separate compartment to prevent scratching from harder materials.
