Sterling Silver or Stainless Steel: Which Silver Ring Suits You?

Our silver ring collection uses two materials that look similar but behave differently on your hand. Since rings get more daily wear than any other jewellery — handwashing, gripping, contact with surfaces, constant friction — the material choice matters more here than it does for earrings or necklaces.

925 Sterling Silver

A precious metal with a warm, luminous brightness that stainless steel doesn't quite replicate. Hypoallergenic, nickel-free, and trusted in fine jewellery for centuries. Sterling silver reacts with air and moisture over time, developing a natural patina — easily reversed with a quick polish. Silver is softer than stainless steel, so rings can develop fine surface marks with heavy daily wear. Best for: People who value the warmth of a precious metal and appreciate how silver develops character with wear.

316L Stainless Steel

Polished to a bright silver tone that closely mirrors sterling silver. Doesn't tarnish, scratch easily, or react with handwash or sanitiser — completely waterproof. The same alloy used in surgical implants. For rings specifically, stainless steel has a structural advantage: it holds its shape under daily gripping, pressing, and accidental impacts without bending or warping. Best for: People who want a silver look with absolutely no maintenance — put them on, forget about them, wear them through everything.

Stacking Rings

Slim bands in varied widths and textures — thin plains, twisted designs, beaded profiles — for building layered combinations that change with your mood. Available in both sterling silver and polished stainless steel. Browse stacking rings →

Dome Rings

Chunky curved bands in polished silver tones. The dome profile catches light from every angle and feels surprisingly comfortable for its width. Stainless steel is particularly suited to dome shapes — the harder metal holds the precise curve permanently. Browse dome rings →

Signet Rings

Flat-face rings with tapered bands — the classic shape that works on any finger and reads as intentional with zero effort. Sterling silver signets develop a distinctive patina where the face stays bright from contact while edges darken naturally. Browse signet rings →

Statement Rings

Bold, wide designs that carry your whole hand by themselves. Textured surfaces, oversized profiles, and sculptural shapes in polished silver finishes. Browse statement rings →

How Silver Rings Handle Daily Wear

Rings face more environmental stress than any other jewellery. Your hands are washed a dozen times a day with soap and sanitiser, they grip rough surfaces, they're exposed to everything you touch. The material choice affects how your ring handles this daily reality:

Handwashing and sanitiser

Stainless steel is completely unaffected. Sterling silver tolerates soap and water well, though alcohol-based sanitisers can accelerate patina slightly. Neither material corrodes or degrades from regular handwashing.

Scratching

Stainless steel is the harder material and resists surface scratches better. Sterling silver is softer and may develop fine marks over time, particularly on wider surfaces like dome and signet faces. Many people prefer this lived-in quality on silver.

Shape retention

Stainless steel holds its form permanently, even on wider bands that experience more daily stress. Sterling silver is more malleable — thin bands hold shape well, but very wide silver rings may develop minor changes with heavy daily use over years.

Water exposure

Stainless steel is fully waterproof for showers, swimming, and exercise. Sterling silver handles water but develops patina faster with regular immersion. For rings you never remove, stainless steel is the practical choice.

Styling Silver Rings

Silver rings are a natural match for cool skin undertones, but mixed-metal styling means the rules are optional. A silver stacking ring alongside a gold dome ring on the same hand, or silver rings on one hand and gold rings on the other, creates contrast that reads as deliberate.

For a coordinated look, pair silver rings with our silver earrings and silver necklaces — same materials, matching finish. See every ring style and metal in our main rings collection. For silver-toned rings that are fully waterproof and gym-safe, explore our waterproof rings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do silver rings tarnish?

925 sterling silver rings can develop a natural patina — a gradual darkening from silver reacting with air and moisture. This is normal for genuine silver and is easily reversed with a polishing cloth. Rings tend to develop patina slightly faster than earrings or necklaces because hands are washed more frequently and exposed to more chemicals. Our 316L stainless steel rings in silver finish don't tarnish at all — they maintain their bright tone indefinitely without any maintenance.

Are silver rings safe for sensitive skin?

Both our materials are hypoallergenic. Sterling silver is naturally nickel-free and widely recommended for sensitive skin. 316L stainless steel is surgical-grade and used in medical implants because of its biocompatibility. If you've reacted to "silver" rings before, the issue was almost certainly nickel in the base alloy — which neither of our materials contains in reactive form. The inner band surface uses the same material as the visible exterior, so there's no cheaper metal hidden where the ring presses against your finger.

Can I shower in silver rings?

Stainless steel silver rings are fully waterproof — no concerns at all. Sterling silver rings handle water, but daily showering with soap and products will accelerate the patina. If you want silver rings you never remove for any reason, stainless steel is the more practical material. If you prefer genuine sterling silver, occasional polishing keeps them bright despite regular water exposure.

Which silver material is better for stacking rings?

Both work, with different trade-offs. Stainless steel is more practical for stacking because it's scratch-resistant — stacked rings create constant ring-on-ring friction, and stainless steel handles this without visible wear. Sterling silver is softer, so stacked silver rings may develop marks where they rub together, though many people see this as part of silver's natural character. If you're mixing metals in your stack (gold and silver together), stainless steel silver rings will maintain their finish alongside gold PVD bands without one ageing faster than the other.

Will a silver ring turn my finger green?

Not ours. Green marks are caused by copper or brass reacting with skin moisture. Most "silver" fashion rings are actually silver-plated brass — when the plating wears through, the copper base causes green discolouration. Our rings use either solid 925 sterling silver (silver throughout, not plated over another metal) or 316L stainless steel (no copper content). Neither will leave green marks.

What's the difference between sterling silver and silver-plated rings?

Sterling silver (925) is a solid alloy — the same metal all the way through. Silver-plated rings have a thin coating of silver over a base metal, usually brass or copper. On rings, where friction is constant (especially on the inner band), plating wears through faster than on any other jewellery type. The exposed base metal then tarnishes, causes skin reactions, and leaves green marks. Sterling silver eliminates this problem because there's no hidden base metal. Look for the 925 hallmark to verify genuine sterling silver.
