Earrings That Actually Work for Sensitive Ears

If you've stopped wearing earrings because the last few pairs left your ears red, itchy, or swollen — the problem almost certainly wasn't you. It was the metal. Most fashion earrings use brass or copper-alloy bases plated with a thin layer of gold. Once that plating wears through (which happens fastest at posts, backs, and hinges), the nickel and copper underneath react with your skin. The result is contact dermatitis — the medical term for that familiar redness, itching, and sometimes blistering that makes earrings feel like a gamble.

Every pair we make eliminates that gamble. We use two base materials, both chosen specifically for skin compatibility: 316L surgical-grade stainless steel (the same nickel-free alloy used in medical implants and body piercings) and 925 sterling silver. Gold-finish pieces use 18k gold PVD coating — a vacuum-bonded finish that doesn't flake or expose reactive base metals the way standard plating does.

The result is earrings you can wear all day, sleep in, shower in, and forget about — even if every other pair you've tried has caused problems.

Why Kaleya Earrings Are Different

Genuinely hypoallergenic

316L stainless steel and 925 sterling silver are both nickel-free and non-reactive. Not "nickel-safe" or "low nickel" — actually nickel-free.

Posts and backs included

The parts that touch your skin most are made from the same surgical-grade materials as the earring itself. No cheap butterfly backs that undo the point of hypoallergenic construction.

PVD coating, not standard plating

Our 18k gold finish is bonded through vacuum deposition, making it up to 10x more durable. It doesn't flake off to reveal reactive base metals underneath.

Tarnish-free

316L steel doesn't oxidise. Sterling silver pieces may develop a natural patina over time (a quick polish brings it back), but they'll never cause skin reactions.

Two-year colour guarantee

On all PVD-coated gold pieces. If the colour fades within two years, we'll make it right.

Building Your Earring Collection

If you're starting from scratch, a solid foundation is one pair of everyday huggies or small hoops (something you can sleep in), one pair of studs for minimal days, and one bolder pair for when you want to make a statement. All three should be hypoallergenic if you have any sensitivity — mixing reactive and non-reactive pairs means you'll still end up with irritated ears on the days you reach for the wrong ones.

For a cohesive look, pair earrings with matching pieces from our necklace collection or ring collection — all made from the same materials, so metals match and everything is equally skin-safe. If water resistance matters for your lifestyle, our dedicated waterproof earrings collection features every style specifically tested for swimming, showering, and workouts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best earrings for sensitive ears?

The most important factor is the base metal, not the finish. Look for earrings made from 316L surgical-grade stainless steel, titanium, or 925 sterling silver — these are all nickel-free and biocompatible. Avoid anything described as "nickel-safe" or "alloy" without specifying the exact composition, as these often still contain enough nickel to trigger reactions. Our entire earring range uses either 316L stainless steel or 925 sterling silver, including the posts and backs, which is where most reactions actually start.

Why do some earrings turn my ears green?

Green discolouration is caused by copper oxidation. When earrings with copper or brass components come into contact with moisture and your skin's natural acidity, the copper produces copper salts that leave a greenish deposit. It's harmless and washes off, but it's a sign that the base metal is reacting with your skin. Earrings made from stainless steel or sterling silver don't contain copper in reactive quantities, so this doesn't happen. For a deeper explanation, see our guide on why jewellery turns skin green.

What does hypoallergenic actually mean for earrings?

Technically, "hypoallergenic" means "less likely to cause an allergic reaction" — but the term isn't regulated, so any brand can use it. What actually matters is the specific metal composition. The safest options are 316L stainless steel (nickel-free surgical grade), pure titanium, solid gold (14k+), and 925 sterling silver. We use 316L stainless steel and 925 sterling silver specifically because they're proven biocompatible materials that the vast majority of people can wear without any reaction.

Can I sleep in hypoallergenic earrings?

Yes, as long as the design is comfortable for it. Huggies, small hoops, and flat-backed studs are the best options for overnight wear because they sit close to the ear without catching on pillows or hair. Our earrings use smooth finishes and lightweight construction specifically to make extended wear comfortable. The hypoallergenic materials mean there's no risk of irritation from prolonged skin contact.

What's the difference between gold-plated and PVD-coated earrings?

Standard gold plating uses an electrochemical process to deposit a thin layer of gold (typically 0.5–1.5 microns) onto a base metal. PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) coating uses vacuum technology to bond gold to the surface at a molecular level, creating a much stronger, more durable finish. In practical terms: standard plated earrings typically last a few months of regular wear before the gold begins to thin, especially at high-friction points like posts and hinges. PVD-coated earrings maintain their finish for years. That's why we offer a two-year colour guarantee on our PVD pieces.

Are your sterling silver earrings also hypoallergenic?

Yes. 925 sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver alloyed with 7.5% other metals (typically copper). While copper can cause green marks in some jewellery, the concentration in sterling silver is low enough that reactions are rare. Sterling silver is widely considered hypoallergenic and is one of the most trusted materials for sensitive ears. The main difference from our stainless steel pieces is that silver can develop a natural patina over time — a quick polish restores the shine, but this is a characteristic of the metal rather than a defect.
