Not All Gold Earrings Are Made the Same

Most gold earrings under £100 use standard electroplating — a thin layer of gold deposited onto a brass or copper base. The finish looks great initially, but it's measured in microns (thousandths of a millimetre), and it wears through within months of regular use. The earring posts thin first, then the front face, and eventually you're left with a dull, discoloured piece that irritates your skin where base metal shows through.

Our gold earrings use a fundamentally different process. Instead of electroplating, we apply 18k gold through PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) — a vacuum technology that bonds gold to 316L stainless steel at a molecular level. The result is a finish that's up to 10 times more durable than conventional plating: it doesn't flake, doesn't peel, and doesn't gradually thin with exposure to water, sweat, or skin oils.

The colour itself is different too. PVD produces a deeper, richer gold tone than standard plating — closer to solid gold in warmth and lustre, without the brittleness or the price. And because the base is surgical-grade stainless steel rather than brass, there's no risk of green discolouration or nickel reactions if the finish ever does wear. We back every PVD-coated pair with a two-year colour guarantee.

What Makes Our Gold Finish Different

18k Gold PVD, not standard plating

Vacuum-bonded at a molecular level. Doesn't flake, peel, or gradually thin the way electroplated gold does.

316L stainless steel base

Surgical-grade, nickel-free, and non-reactive. If the gold ever does wear through after years of use, there's polished steel underneath — not tarnished brass.

Richer gold tone

PVD produces a deeper, warmer colour than standard plating, closer to solid gold in appearance.

Waterproof and sweat-proof

Shower, swim, work out — the finish holds. No need to remove your earrings for water exposure.

Two-year colour guarantee

We guarantee the PVD finish won't fade. Standard plated earrings rarely last six months of daily wear.

Choosing the Right Gold Earrings

If you're comparing gold earring options, here's what the different types actually mean in practice:

Solid Gold (9k–24k)

The most expensive option and the most durable long-term, but it's soft and scratches easily at higher karats. It's also not waterproof in the way most people assume — chlorine can damage solid gold alloys. Prices typically start from £150–200 for simple studs.

Gold Vermeil

Uses sterling silver as the base with a thicker gold plating layer (minimum 2.5 microns). It's a step up from standard plating, but the finish still wears through within 1–2 years of regular use, and the silver base can tarnish when exposed.

Gold PVD over Stainless Steel

What we use — offers the best combination of durability, water resistance, and skin compatibility at an accessible price point. The finish outlasts both standard plating and vermeil, the base metal never tarnishes or causes reactions, and the whole piece is genuinely waterproof. It's the practical choice for earrings you want to wear every day without thinking about.

Complete Your Gold Look

Pair gold earrings with pieces from our gold necklaces and gold rings collections — everything uses the same 18k PVD finish, so colours match perfectly across your entire set. For contrast, try mixing gold earrings with pieces from our silver earrings collection — mixed metals are one of the strongest styling trends right now and work particularly well when layering multiple piercings.

If water resistance is your priority, explore our dedicated waterproof earrings collection, which features every style specifically tested for swimming, showering, and gym wear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are gold PVD earrings better than gold plated?

In terms of durability, yes — significantly. Standard gold plating uses an electrochemical process that deposits a thin gold layer (typically 0.5–1.5 microns) onto a base metal. This layer wears through within months of regular use, especially at high-friction points like earring posts and hinges. PVD coating bonds gold to the surface using vacuum technology, creating a much stronger adhesion that lasts years rather than months. The colour is also richer with PVD — closer to solid gold in warmth and depth.

Do gold earrings turn your skin green?

Standard gold-plated earrings can, because the base metal underneath (usually brass or copper) reacts with moisture and skin acidity once the plating wears through. Our gold earrings won't cause this because the base is 316L stainless steel — a non-reactive, nickel-free alloy that doesn't produce the copper salts responsible for green discolouration. Even if the PVD gold finish were to wear down after years of use, the steel underneath is inert against skin. See our full guide on why jewellery turns skin green.

Can I shower and swim in gold PVD earrings?

Yes. PVD coating is specifically resistant to water, chlorine, saltwater, soap, and sweat. Unlike standard gold plating, which gradually degrades with repeated water exposure, the vacuum-bonded PVD finish doesn't thin or break down in wet conditions. Most of our customers wear their earrings 24/7, including in the shower and pool.

How long do gold PVD earrings last?

With daily wear, you can expect years of consistent colour and finish. We offer a two-year colour guarantee on all PVD-coated pieces. Many customers report their earrings looking as good as new well beyond that. For comparison, standard gold-plated earrings typically show visible wear within 3–6 months of daily use, and gold vermeil lasts roughly 1–2 years before the finish noticeably thins.

Are gold earrings from Kaleya Studio suitable for sensitive skin?

Yes. The base metal is 316L surgical-grade stainless steel — the same alloy used in medical implants and body piercings, chosen specifically because it's nickel-free and biocompatible. The PVD gold coating itself is also non-reactive. This applies to every component, including posts and backs, which is where most earring-related skin reactions originate.

What's the difference between 18k gold PVD and solid gold earrings?

Solid gold earrings are made entirely from a gold alloy (mixed with other metals for strength), making them more valuable as a material but also softer, scratchable, and significantly more expensive. Our 18k gold PVD earrings have a stainless steel core with a gold surface bonded through vacuum deposition. They're harder, more scratch-resistant, fully waterproof, and hypoallergenic — at a fraction of the price. The trade-off is that PVD is a surface treatment rather than solid gold throughout, so it doesn't carry the same resale or melt value. For everyday earrings you want to wear without worrying, PVD over stainless steel is the more practical choice.
