Not All Gold Rings Are Made the Same

Rings are the hardest test for any gold finish. Your hands are washed a dozen times a day, gripped around everything from coffee cups to gym equipment, and exposed to soap, sanitiser, and cleaning products constantly. Standard gold plating fails on rings faster than on any other jewellery type — the inner band wears first, then the edges, then the top face. Within months, you're left with a ring that's patchy gold in some spots and tarnished base metal in others.

Our gold rings use 18k gold PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) coating over 316L surgical-grade stainless steel. PVD bonds gold to steel at a molecular level using vacuum technology — a fundamentally different process from electroplating. The finish doesn't thin at friction points, doesn't react with soap or sanitiser, and doesn't gradually break down from daily handwashing. The colour is deeper and richer than standard plating — closer to solid gold in warmth — and the stainless steel base means no green marks on your finger if the gold ever wears, just polished steel.

Every PVD-coated ring is backed by a two-year colour guarantee.

Shop Gold Rings by Style

Stacking Rings

Slim bands in varied widths and textures for building combinations that change daily. Thin plains, twisted designs, and beaded profiles — all in warm 18k gold PVD. The most flexible way to wear gold on your hands. Browse gold stacking rings →

Dome Rings

Chunky, curved bands that catch light from every angle. The gold PVD finish follows the dome contour perfectly — vacuum deposition coats evenly across curves where standard plating tends to thin at the peak. Browse gold dome rings →

Signet Rings

Flat-face rings with tapered bands — the classic shape in warm gold. PVD coating performs at its best on the signet's flat face, where there's no curve for the finish to thin around. Consistent, even gold tone across the entire surface. Browse gold signet rings →

Statement Rings

Bold, wide designs with oversized profiles and textured surfaces. The stainless steel base holds dramatic shapes permanently — no warping or bending that softer metals develop with wider bands. Browse gold statement rings →

Choosing the Right Gold Ring

If you're comparing gold ring options, here's what the different types mean in practice — and why the differences matter more for rings than for any other jewellery:

Solid gold (9k–24k)

The most valuable option with inherent material worth. But solid gold is soft — rings scratch and deform more easily than expected under daily hand stresses. Also not as waterproof as most assume — chlorine and harsh chemicals can damage gold alloys. Prices start from £150+ for simple bands.

Gold vermeil

Sterling silver base with a thicker gold layer (minimum 2.5 microns). Better than standard plating, but rings are where vermeil shows its weakness — constant gripping, washing, and daily hand use wears through even thick gold layers within 1–2 years on a daily-wear ring.

Standard gold plating

A thin electrochemical layer over brass or copper. Fails on rings faster than any other jewellery type. The inner band wears first from constant friction, then the edges, often leaving patchy colour within months of daily wear.

Gold PVD over stainless steel

What we use. The vacuum-bonded finish handles the constant chemical and mechanical exposure hands deal with, the stainless steel base holds its shape under stress that would bend brass, and the whole piece is waterproof through handwashing, showers, and swimming. For daily-wear rings, this combination outperforms every other gold option at its price point.

Sizing Gold Rings

Ring width affects how a ring fits over the knuckle — here's how to size correctly for each style:

Thin stacking bands (1–3mm) — true to size.

Slim bands slide over the knuckle easily and sit comfortably at your standard ring size. No adjustment needed.

Wider styles (5mm+) — size up a half size.

Dome rings, signet rings, and statement rings wider than 5mm create more friction against the knuckle. Go up a half size from your stacking ring measurement — the ring will still sit securely on your finger.

Measure in the afternoon.

Fingers are at their largest from daily activity and warmth by mid-afternoon. A ring that fits perfectly in the morning can feel tight by 3pm — measuring later in the day gives you a more reliable size for all-day wear.

Complete Your Gold Look

Match gold rings with pieces from our gold earrings and gold necklaces — all use the same 18k PVD coating, so the gold tone matches precisely. For contrast, mix gold rings with silver rings on the same hand or opposite hands — mixed metals are one of the strongest current styling trends.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are gold PVD rings better than gold plated?

For rings, the difference is dramatic. Hands experience more friction, moisture, and chemical exposure than any other body part — which is why standard gold plating fails on rings faster than on earrings or necklaces. The inner band wears first from constant finger friction, then edges from surface contact. PVD coating is bonded at a molecular level and resists this kind of sustained mechanical and chemical wear. The colour is also richer — closer to solid gold in warmth and depth.

Will gold rings turn my finger green?

Standard gold-plated rings over brass or copper will — and rings are worse for this than any other jewellery because sweat and moisture get trapped under the band with no airflow. Once the plating wears through on the inner surface, the copper base reacts with trapped moisture to produce green marks. Our rings use 316L stainless steel with no copper content, so green discolouration is impossible regardless of how much you sweat or how often you wash your hands. Read more in our guide on why jewellery turns skin green.

Can I wash my hands without removing gold rings?

Yes — our PVD coating and stainless steel base are completely resistant to soap, water, and hand sanitiser. You don't need to remove your rings for handwashing, which is one of the main practical advantages over standard plated rings that degrade with every wash. Shower, swim, clean — the finish holds through all of it.

How long do gold PVD rings last?

With daily wear including regular handwashing, you can expect years of consistent colour. We guarantee the PVD finish for two years — and rings are where this guarantee matters most because hands test the finish harder than any other wear. For comparison, standard gold-plated rings typically show visible inner-band wear within 2–3 months of daily use. Gold vermeil lasts longer but still thins noticeably within 1–2 years on a daily-wear ring.

What's the difference between 18k gold PVD and solid gold rings?

Solid gold rings are gold alloy throughout, giving them inherent material value but also making them softer, more scratchable, and significantly more expensive (typically £150+ for a simple band). Our PVD rings have a stainless steel core with gold bonded to the surface — harder, more scratch-resistant, waterproof, and hypoallergenic at a fraction of the price. The trade-off: PVD doesn't carry resale or melt value. For rings you want to wear daily without worrying about scratches, water damage, or green marks, PVD over stainless steel is the more practical choice.

Should I size up for wider gold rings?

Yes. Dome rings, signet rings, and statement rings wider than 5mm should be ordered a half size up from your stacking ring measurement. The wider band creates more friction when sliding over the knuckle. Thin stacking bands (1–3mm) fit true to your standard size.
