Sterling Silver or Stainless Steel: Which Silver Earrings Are Right for You?

Our silver earring collection uses two different materials, and they're not interchangeable — each suits a different lifestyle. Understanding the difference helps you choose earrings that work the way you need them to, rather than discovering the hard way that you picked the wrong one.

925 Sterling Silver

A precious metal with a bright, reflective finish that standard plated jewellery can't replicate. Naturally hypoallergenic and comfortable against sensitive skin. The trade-off is maintenance — sterling silver reacts with air and moisture over time, developing a natural patina. A quick polish brings the brightness back. Best for: People who appreciate the look and feel of a precious metal and don't mind occasional polishing.

316L Stainless Steel

Polished to a bright silver tone that closely mirrors sterling silver, but the material doesn't tarnish, requires no polishing, and is harder and more scratch-resistant. The same alloy used in medical implants — fully waterproof and the most reliably hypoallergenic option available. Best for: People who want a silver look with zero maintenance — put them in, never take them off, never polish them.

Both Materials, Both Hypoallergenic

Skin reactions to earrings are almost always caused by nickel — a metal commonly found in brass, copper alloys, and low-quality stainless steel. Neither of our silver earring materials contains nickel in reactive quantities:

925 Sterling Silver

A precious metal alloy (silver + copper) that's naturally nickel-free. Widely considered one of the safest materials for sensitive ears, and one of the few metals recommended by dermatologists for people with metal allergies.

316L Stainless Steel

Surgical-grade, with nickel content locked within the alloy structure so it doesn't leach onto skin. The same grade approved for body piercings, surgical implants, and long-term skin contact — arguably the most reliably hypoallergenic metal available in fashion jewellery.

No cheaper components where it counts.

Whichever material you choose, the posts, backs, and clasps are made from the same alloy as the earring body — no hidden base metals where they touch your skin most.

Styling Silver Earrings

Silver earrings are the natural complement to cool skin undertones, but they work across the board — especially as mixed-metal styling has become the norm rather than the exception. A pair of silver hoops with a gold necklace, or silver studs alongside gold stacking rings, creates a layered look that feels intentional and modern.

If you prefer a fully coordinated silver look, pair your earrings with pieces from our silver ring collection — the same materials, matching finish. For the waterproof stainless steel option across all jewellery categories, explore our waterproof jewellery collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do silver earrings tarnish?

It depends on the material. Our 925 sterling silver earrings can develop a natural patina over time — a slight darkening caused by the silver reacting with air and moisture. This is normal for real silver and easily reversed with a gentle polish. Our 316L stainless steel earrings in silver finish don't tarnish at all — the material is completely resistant to oxidation, so they stay bright indefinitely without any maintenance.

Are silver earrings good for sensitive ears?

Both materials we use are hypoallergenic. Sterling silver is naturally nickel-free and is one of the metals most commonly recommended by dermatologists for sensitive skin. 316L stainless steel is surgical-grade and used in medical implants because of its biocompatibility. If you've reacted to "silver-coloured" earrings before, the culprit was almost certainly nickel in the base metal — which neither of our materials contains in reactive form.

Can I shower in silver earrings?

Our stainless steel silver earrings — yes, without any concerns. They're fully waterproof. Sterling silver earrings can be worn in the shower, but regular water exposure will accelerate the natural patina. If you want silver earrings you never need to remove, the stainless steel option is the better choice. If you prefer genuine sterling silver and don't mind an occasional polish, showering won't damage them — it just means polishing slightly more often.

What's the difference between sterling silver and silver-plated earrings?

Sterling silver (925) is a solid alloy — silver throughout, not a coating over another metal. Silver-plated earrings have a thin layer of silver over a base metal (usually brass or copper). The plating wears off over time, exposing the base metal which can tarnish and cause skin reactions. Sterling silver doesn't have this problem because there's no hidden base metal underneath. You can verify sterling silver by the 925 hallmark stamped on the piece.

Which material should I choose — sterling silver or stainless steel?

Choose sterling silver if you value the lustre and prestige of a precious metal and don't mind occasional polishing. Choose stainless steel if you want zero maintenance — earrings that never tarnish, never need polishing, and can be worn through swimming, showers, and workouts without removal. Both are hypoallergenic and safe for sensitive ears. Many of our customers own pieces in both materials and switch based on the occasion or their mood.

Will 316L stainless steel earrings look like real silver?

Very close, but not identical. Polished 316L stainless steel has a bright, reflective silver tone that's difficult to distinguish from sterling silver in everyday wear. The main visual difference is that sterling silver has a slightly warmer, softer sheen, while stainless steel is a touch cooler and more mirror-like. Side by side you might notice the difference; worn separately, most people won't.
