Why Rings Need to Be Waterproof More Than Any Other Jewellery

Your hands go through more in a single day than any other part of your body. You wash them a dozen times or more — with soap, hand sanitiser, washing-up liquid, cleaning products. You grip, press, twist, and handle surfaces constantly. And through all of it, your rings are right there, absorbing every bit of moisture, friction, and chemical exposure.

This is why rings are the jewellery category where "waterproof" matters most. An earring gets wet in the shower once a day. A necklace catches some spray. But a ring gets submerged in water, coated in soap, and dried out — repeatedly, every single day. Standard gold-plated rings over brass or copper can't survive this. The plating wears through on the inner band first, then along the edges, and the trapped moisture between the band and your skin corrodes the base metal from the inside — producing the green marks and irritation that makes most fashion rings unwearable within months.

Every ring in this collection is built for this reality. 316L surgical-grade stainless steel doesn't corrode from handwashing, sanitiser, or any household chemical you'll encounter. 18k gold PVD coating bonded through vacuum deposition handles the constant wet-dry cycle that destroys standard plating. The finish doesn't gradually thin from repeated water exposure — it's engineered for exactly this kind of sustained daily use. Every piece is backed by a two-year colour guarantee.

Waterproof Ring Styles

Stacking Rings

Slim bands in varied widths and textures — all PVD-coated and fully waterproof. Stacking rings are particularly well-suited to permanent wear because they're lightweight and low-profile enough that you never need to remove them for any activity. Build your stack and leave it. Browse stacking rings →

Dome Rings

Chunky curved bands in waterproof gold PVD. The stainless steel base holds the dome profile permanently — no flattening or warping from daily hand use — and the PVD coating follows the curved surface evenly without thinning at the peak. Browse dome rings →

Signet Rings

Flat-face rings with tapered bands, all PVD-coated for full water resistance. The flat signet face is where PVD coating performs at its strongest — perfectly even coverage with no curves to thin around. Browse signet rings →

What These Rings Handle Every Day

Calling a ring "waterproof" is vague. Here's specifically what our rings are tested against and what the materials resist:

Handwashing with soap

Multiple times daily. Soap doesn't affect PVD coating or stainless steel. Standard plating softens and thins with repeated soap exposure, especially in warm water.

Hand sanitiser

Alcohol-based sanitisers are chemically aggressive and strip conventional gold plating rapidly. PVD coating is resistant to alcohol and the other active ingredients in sanitiser formulations.

Washing-up liquid and cleaning products

Detergents and household chemicals that would corrode brass or copper have no effect on 316L stainless steel. You don't need to remove your ring to do the dishes.

Swimming pools

Chlorine aggressively attacks conventional gold plating and corrodes copper-based alloys. PVD over stainless steel is specifically resistant to chlorinated water.

Saltwater

Sea salt accelerates corrosion in most metals. 316L stainless steel is classified as a marine-grade alloy — used in boat fittings and coastal infrastructure for exactly this reason.

Sweat trapped under the band

One of the most corrosive conditions for any ring. Perspiration is acidic and stays trapped between the band and your skin with no airflow. Stainless steel is completely non-reactive to sweat — no corrosion, no green marks, no matter how long the ring stays on.

Designed for Rings You Never Remove

Most rings are designed to be taken on and off — for handwashing, for sleeping, for exercise. Our waterproof rings are designed for the opposite: put them on once and leave them. If you're choosing rings specifically for permanent wear, here's what to consider:

Comfort-fit profiles.

Rings you never remove need to be comfortable around the clock — including during sleep when your hands may swell slightly. Our wider rings (domes, signets) use curved inner profiles that reduce contact pressure for extended wear.

Sizing for all conditions.

Fingers swell with heat, exercise, and fluid retention throughout the day. For permanent-wear rings, size so the ring fits comfortably at your largest — typically mid-afternoon or after exercise. A ring that's comfortable at its tightest will be comfortable all the time.

Stacking considerations.

If you're stacking waterproof rings permanently, the ring-on-ring friction is constant rather than intermittent. PVD coating handles this — it's significantly more friction-resistant than standard plating — so your stack maintains even colour across all rings rather than the middle ones fading first.

Complete Your Waterproof Set

Match waterproof rings with pieces from the rest of our waterproof collection — all built from the same 316L stainless steel and PVD coating. Pair with our waterproof earrings, waterproof necklaces, and waterproof bracelets for a fully waterproof jewellery set you never need to think about.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wash my hands without removing waterproof rings?

Yes — that's the primary purpose of a waterproof ring. Standard gold-plated rings degrade with every handwash because soap, warm water, and friction combine to strip the plating. Our PVD coating and stainless steel base are completely unaffected by soap, water, and hand sanitiser. You can wash your hands dozens of times a day without any impact on the finish or the metal.

Will a waterproof ring turn my finger green?

No. Green marks happen when copper or brass base metals react with moisture trapped under the band — and rings are the worst jewellery type for this because the band-to-skin contact is continuous and moisture has nowhere to escape. Our rings use 316L stainless steel, which contains no copper and is completely non-reactive to sweat and water. Even with permanent wear where the ring never comes off, there's no green discolouration.

Can I swim in waterproof rings?

Yes — in chlorinated pools, saltwater, hot tubs, and any other water environment. Chlorine is particularly aggressive toward conventional gold plating and copper alloys, but PVD coating and 316L stainless steel are specifically resistant to it. One practical consideration: make sure your ring fits securely, as cold water can cause fingers to shrink slightly, and a loose ring in a pool or ocean is a ring you might lose.

How long do waterproof rings last?

The 316L stainless steel base is essentially permanent — it doesn't corrode, weaken, or degrade over time under any normal conditions. The PVD gold coating is guaranteed for two years and is designed to last well beyond that with daily wear including regular water exposure. For comparison, standard gold-plated rings typically show visible inner-band wear within 2–3 months of daily handwashing.

Can I wear a waterproof ring 24/7 without ever taking it off?

Yes — that's what they're designed for. The materials handle continuous skin contact, constant moisture exposure, and daily chemical exposure (soap, sanitiser, cleaning products) without any degradation. The hypoallergenic properties of 316L stainless steel mean there's no risk of skin irritation from permanent wear. The only reason to remove a waterproof ring would be if your finger size changes significantly, such as during pregnancy or medical conditions that cause prolonged swelling.

Are waterproof rings hypoallergenic?

Yes. 316L surgical-grade stainless steel is nickel-free and one of the most biocompatible metals available — used in medical implants and body piercings for exactly this reason. The PVD gold coating is also non-reactive. This matters especially for rings worn permanently, where the inner band is in continuous contact with skin that's regularly exposed to sweat, soap, and moisture — conditions that intensify metal reactions in anyone with sensitivity.
